Trimble should agree early meeting with Adams

Sinn Fein Chairperson and Derry City Councillor Mitchel Mc McLaughlin, has called on David Trimble to ``open his mind up to the potential created by the new situation and accept the need for Unionists and Sinn Fein to engage in real and meaningful dialogue with each other.''

Mr McLaughlin called on the UUP Leader to `` agree an early meeting with Gerry Adams to inject real momentum and confidence into the talks process.'' <P>

Councillor Mc Laughlin said:

``The meeting yesterday between Gerry Adams and Tony Blair was not only historic it was also ground breaking. It was opponents accepting the reality that peace can only be achieved if the unthinkable happens. And who would have thought a few years ago ,that yesterdays meeting could have occurred.''

The Sinn Fein Chairperson continued:

``If the victims of conflict like Rita Rosterick and Colin Parry, whom Gerry Adams spoke to yesterday, can put peace first , why can't the Unionist leaderships ?''

Councillor Mc Laughlin concluded:

``We want to hear from David Trimble what his vision is for the future ? What are his hopes, his ideas, his proposals for a new a beginning between people of this Island ? This can in my view be best done through face to face talks.''
