Adams hits out at sentencing Herri Batasuna leaders
Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams MP commenting on the sentence handed out in a Spanish Court to the leaders of Herri Batasuna said:
``For as long as Sinn Fein has known Herri Batasuna it has been a party committed to finding peace.
``The pursuit of this show trial by the Spanish government and the vindictive sentences handed out at the end of this process, will not resolve this long running conflict.
``Repression, imprisonment, shoot-to-kill tactics, disinformation, injustice and violations of human rights, never brought peace. The Spanish government, like the British government in Ireland, has employed all of these tactics. The Spanish government must change the mindset which refuses to recognise that these show trials are counter productive and undermine the search for real peace.
``Peace requires courage, imagination and negotiations. It requires a democratic settlement based on a recognition of peoples rights to self-determination and equality. The sooner the Spanish government recognises these broad common sense principles the sooner peace will come to Euskadi - the Basque homeland.'' ENDS
