Human rights visit welcomed

Statement from Sinn Fein assembly member for Foyle and spokesperson on Human Rights Mary Nelis on tomorrows visit to Belfast by former Irish President and current UN commisioner on Human Rights Mary Robinson.

Cllr. Nelis said:

``The visit of Mrs. Robinson comes at a particularly crucial time in light of the recent report by the UN into the Human Rights abuses by the RUC. The investigation of the United Nations into the debate surrounding the future of policing here is one which I welcome.''

``Over the past thirty years the institutions of the State here have violated Human Rights. As a part of the overall peace process these abuses must first be recognised and then addressed by the State. the interest and internention of the UN can only serve to assist this.''

``Mary Robinson made a valuable contribution to the development of the Peace Process in her role as Irish President. By her visit tomorrow Mrs. Robinson is indicating that she intends to continue in this vein in he new role as the UN commissioner on Human Rights.''
