Progress requires Executive and Ministerial Council

Sinn Fein Chairperson Mitchel McLaughlin, speaking at a meeting of the party's Ard Chomhairle (National Executive) in Dublin today said that we need to guard against complacency in the event of progress being made on policy and implementation bodies.

Mr. McLaughlin said:

``It is clear that we are close to agreeing the number and nature of the policy and implementation bodies. Even though the mechanism used to deal with these issues is different to what was agreed in the Good Friday Agreement Sinn Fein engaged positively in order to meet the practical timetables required.

``But if the number and nature of the policy and implementation bodies is agreed it is essential that we guard against complacency at this time, especially against the background of no real movement or progress which would establish the institutions of the Good Friday Agreement even in shadow form.

``Agreement on the number and nature of the policy and implementation bodies must act as an incentive to move speedily to the setting up the Executive and the all-Ireland Council and the Implementation Bodies. It is these institutions which are the lynch-pin for making political progress. No matter what is agreed with regard to the policy and implementation bodies unless the Executive and all-Ireland Council are in place and functioning then nothing can be implemented.''
