Mowlam fails to reflect reality on the ground

Sinn Fein Chairperson Mitchel McLaughlin has expressed concern at the remarks made by British Secretary of State, Mo Mowlam, in Washington yesterday.

Mr. McLaughlin said:

``The new situation created by the IRA cessation and the start of the talks has not been matched by British.

``The re-inforcing of British military fortifications and the continuing high troop levels in nationalist areas and associated raids and harassment increases the space for those who want to bring the peace process to a halt.

``The vicious circle of no movement in the talks feeding no movement outside and vice versa must be broken.

``People must see real and tangible evidence of a political will for change.

``Those with the power and authority to effect that change and move things forward must take up their responsibilities and stop allowing a security agenda to dictate the pace.

``The British government has the power to immediately make changes on the ground which will positively affect the quality of nationalist peoples lives. They should do so urgently.''
