University accreditation of RUC training centre slammed

Sinn Fein spokesperson on policing Bairbre de Brun has this morning slammed the decision by the University of Ulster to accept RUC training centre at Garnerville as an accredited campus.

Assembly member de Brún said:

``The University of Ulster should not attempt to bestow credibility on the RUC or to give a veneer of change where none exists.

``This is a crass move by the University to combine with the RUC for financial gain. They will be aware that the RUC will use this move to try and justify its existence and its present practices.

``We can expect to see a raft of such announcements, in the coming months as the RUC try to pre-empt, control and minimise any possibility of change.

``Nationalists want to see the `new beginning in policing promised in the Good Friday Agreement, not opportunistic PR stunts by the RUC.''
