Adams Calls for Release of Building Workers
Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams MP speaking in Canada today called for the immediate release of jailed building workers Willie Rogers and Dave McMahon. The two men were sent to Mountjoy Jail on Wednesday for participating in a strike against the black economy. Mr. Adams said it was outrageous that any worker should be jailed for highlighting abuses in the construction industry.
Mr Adams said:
``Sinn Fein fully supports the Trade Union Movement in their fight to unionise and improve conditions on building sites. The appalling legacy of over two thousand accidents and fifteen deaths last year is testament to the lack of safety conditions in the industry. The reality behind the current building boom is falling wages, worsening conditions on sites and workers being intimidated into the black economy.
``It is outrageous that any worker would be sent to jail for highlighting the widespread abuse of tax and safety and employment legislation in the Building Industry.
``Willie Rogers and Dave McMahon should be commended for their actions and not jailed. I will be contacting the government to seek their immediate release.''
