Outrage at training of RUC by gardai in Templemore

Sinn Fein TD Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin has expressed ``outrage'' at the news that the gardai are next week to host 60 RUC members at a special training session for three days in Templemore.

Deputy Ó Caoláin said:

``It is an outrage that 60 RUC members are being hosted for special training by the Garda. The news comes in the wake of the refusal of the Director of Public Prosecutions in the North to prosecute the RUC members who sat in their Land Rover and watched as a loyalist mob beat Robert Hamill to death in Portadown last year. This is something which the Irish government only last week undertook to raise with the British government.

``The recently published Patten Report on Policing acknowledged that the RUC does not enjoy the support of the nationalist community in the Six Counties. It is disgraceful for the Garda to host this force at a time when the Patten Report is still being considered and legislation to implement it is awaited. It is a gross insult to the people who have suffered, and still suffer, at the hands of the sectarian RUC that this visit should be described as `training in peacekeeping'.

``I call on the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform John O'Donoghue to order that this training operation be cancelled immediately.''
