Review of Bloody Sunday inadequate

Sinn Fein Chairperson and Derry City Councillor Mitchel Mc Laughlin commenting on suggestions in the media that the British government is about to announce a Bloody Sunday `review' has said that what is required is the setting up of an Independent International Judicial inquiry into the murders.

Councillor Mc Laughlin said:

``What is required is the setting up of an Independent International Judicial inquiry into the murders which occurred in Derry on Bloody Sunday. There must be no attempt to set up a second Widgery.

``The Bloody Sunday families deserve nothing less than a total repudiation of the Widgery Tribunal and a judicial panel of International stature set up to carry out a completly fresh investigation into all aspects of what transpired on that day.

``Any panel of investigation must be empowered to subpoena eyewitnesses and all documentation relevent to the planning and results of British military actions on Bloody Sunday.''
