Drug measures cautiously welcomed
Sinn Fein Dublin City Councillor, Christy Burke, today cautiously welcomed the new measures announced to tackle the city's drug dealers.
Cllr. Burke said:
``Sinn Fein welcomes in general the new measures announced to tackle the city's drug dealers and hope that they are followed up on, unlike the many other measures promised over the last fourteen years. However, it is vital that these resources be directed firmly at the drug barons and street dealers and not at the suffering communities. The threat to use public order legislation against people involved in street marches is not helpful and will be a recipe for further confrontation between communities and the Gardaí.
``As Sinn Fein and numerous other community groups have said, the Gardaí alone cannot end the drugs epidemic. The solution lies in community groups, residents associations, health boards and doctors along with the Gardaí coming together to tackle the problem.'' ENDS
