Ulster Unionists support rise in sectarian tension

Statement from Sinn Fein's Mid Ulster MP, Martin McGuinness, accusing the Ulster Unionist Party of ``encouraging sectarian conflict in Portadown''. This follows the speech by Martin Smyth at yesterday's parade in Portadown.

Mr. McGuinness said:

``It is nothing short of disgraceful and hypocritical that a senior member of the Ulster Unionist Party should speak at an Orange parade in Portadown yesterday. The nationalist people of Garvaghy Road have been on the receiving end of a vicious sectarian campaign of intimidation night and day for the past three months.

``The presence of someone so senior from the Ulster Unionist Party at the parade is a green light for these sectarian protests to continue. This party can't have it both ways, on the one hand being involved in a peace process while on the other encouraging such sectarian behaviour.''
