Labour Party expectations high
Statement from Sinn Fein Chairperson, Mitchel McLaughlin, commenting on the impasse in the current situation on his return from the British Labour Party conference.
Mr. McLaughlin said:
``I've been attending British Labour Party conferences for a number of years. This year, not surprisingly, Ireland is very high on the party's agenda and there is clearly considerable goodwill amongst delegates at the conference towards Ireland.
``I've spoken to many people at the conference whose expectations are high about political progress following the Good Friday Agreement.
``This mood is not confined to this conference. It is right across Ireland. People's expectations are high. They voted for the agreement in unprecedented numbers and they want to see it implemented in full not in part.
``The unionists cannot rewrite the agreement nor can they block Sinn Fein's right to Ministerial posts or the formation of the Executive which is the next logical step. Mr. Trimble and Mr. Mallon should jointly pursue the mandate they have been given and lead everyone forward at this crucial time.''
