A Policing Service for a New Future
Speaking at a press conference to launch ``A Policing Service for a New Future'' the Sinn Fein submission to the Independent Commission on Policing, Sinn Fein spokesperson on Policing and Justice, Bairbre de Brun said:
``Sinn Fein has made a number of proposals regarding the composition, ethos, structure and organisation of the new policing service and a summery of these is contained at the end of our written submission.
There needs to be:
- a new policing service which is representative of and accountable to the community it serves
- a monitoring body with representatives of the Irish and British governments and the European Commission, as well as legal and human rights experts
- localised structures and a tiered approach that allows for the closest possible relationship between police and community
- quotas to ensure that all sections of society are represented
- local systems of restorative justice to complement the new policing structures
- human and civil rights training which is subject to external inspection, monitoring, annual review and assessment
``The task is to create a new police service which is acceptable to all and which people from all sections of society will be happy to be part of or to work with closely. The most difficult aspect of this work will be ensuring the allegiance of those for whom the term police is synonymous with repression.''
