Troop withdrawals positive
Sinn Fein Mid Ulster MP Martin McGuinness has described as a ``positive step in the right direction'' today's announcement that 500 British troops are to be removed from South Derry. He also called for the removal of the RUC from nationalist areas.
Mr. McGuinness said:
``The announcement of the removal of more British troops from Ireland is a positive step in the right direction.
``While I welcome this development it has to be remembered that the Good Friday Agreement was signed five months ago and we are only now seeing such developments.
``The British government must speed up the demilitarisation of the six counties. In particular they should begin dismantling the huge military installations dotted across the six counties. They should also immediately remove the RUC from nationalist areas.''
