Plastic Bullets Should be Banned

Sinn Fein Belfast Councillor Chrissie McAuley has called for the banning of plastic bullets. Her call follows revelations about the differing sets of rules governing their use.

Councillor McAuley said:

``The publication of the differing rules governing the use of this lethal weapon will only reinforce for many people the view that plastic bullets should be banned immediately''.

``It is quite clear from all the evidence built up over the last 25 years that rubber and plastic bullets are weapons of intimadation and terror which have been used to cripple and kill. Plastic bullets have been used overwhelmingly against the nationalist community.''

`It is also very clear from the available statistics and the injuries inflicted that these weapons have been widely abused by members of the RUC and British army. The so called guide-lines are routinely flouted.''

``The Labour party in opposition called for the banning of this weapon. In Government it now has an opportunity to implement that policy.''
