Sinn Fein responds to Mowlam Announcement

Sinn Fein Chairperson Mitchel McLaughlin has said that today's announcement by Mo Mowlam regarding the IRA cessation was the correct one.

Mr. McLaughlin said:

``The announcement by Mo Mowlam tday was the correct one. It is patently obvious that the IRA cessation is still intact. What is now required is for all the pro-Agreement parties to work together to collectively implement all outstanding aspects of the agreement.

``In our view there are a number of outstanding issues to be resolved. This can only be done in the context of an open and democratic political process. Both the unionists and the British government have a responsibility in all of this, toowork alongside Sinn Fein and the other parties to ensure progress is made on all fronts. The challenge for the political leaderships at this time is to demonstrate that politics can work.''

Referring to the upcoming review Mr. McLaughlin said:

``Sinn Fein would welcome a genuine review but clearly this must be within the terms outlined under the Good Friday Agreement and the legislation presently before the British parliament departs significantly from those terms.''
