RUC attempt to Provoke Serious Disturbances in Derry
Sinn Fein Councillor Peter Anderson has accused the RUC of attempting to provoke serious disturbances in Derry today.
Mr Anderson said:
``Following the dispersal of a peaceful and dignified protest organised by the Bogside Residents Group in Derry today the RUC deliberately set about inflaming the situation in a blatant attempt to provoke young people into a riot situation.
RUC in full riot gear took up position at the bottom of William Street and at the top of Sackville Street at a time when it was clear that nobody wanted confrontation. When asked by both public representatives and business people to explain their presence they replied that they were there to prevent a breach of the peace. The only people who were disturbing the peace of the people of Derry today were the RUC and its cohorts in the Apprentice Boys many of whom are one and the same.
Without this provocation display of force there would have been no disturbances in Derry today. The RUC must take full responsibility for any violence which may occur.''
