Apprentice Boys should reconsider decision

Statement from Martin McGuinness calling on the leadership of the Apprentice Boys in Derry to ``reconsider their decision to reject the proposal from the Bogside Residents Group which if accepted would have resolved the Derry march and the feeder parades in Lower Ormeau, Lurgan and Newtownbutler.

Mr. McGuinness said:

``I am calling on the leadership of the Apprentice Boys to reconsider their opposition to the proposal from the Bogside Residents Group. I believe the proposal if accepted would have defused the controversy over the Derry parade and the feeder parades in the Lower Ormeau Road, Newtownbutler and Lurgan.

``The only way forward is through meaningful dialogue between residents and the loyal orders. This has to apply to all situations. The Apprentice Boys cannot pick and choose when and where to have meaningful dialogue.

``The people of Derry are prepared to accommodate the Apprentice Boys marching through the city on Saturday. They should be prepared to accommodate the wishes of the residents in areas like the Lower Ormeau Road, Lurgan and Newtownbutler.''
