Caution and vigilance urged after shooting
Deputy Lord Mayor of Derry, Councillor Lynn Fleming of Sinn Fein, has urged nationalists to excercise caution and vigilance following what appears to be a sectarian gun attack on a Catholic family in the Waterside area. Two brothers Francis aged forty nine and Anthony aged fifty three were shot a number of times by a gang of five or six masked men who burst in to their home. One of the brothers Francis is in a critical condition in hospital.
Councillor Fleming said:
``Last nights attack would appear to be the work of loyalists and the RUC should state publicly which organisation it believes is responsible. This attack is but the latest in a long list of such incidents where Catholic families in isolated areas of the city are targeted for loyalist harrassment, intimidation and violence.
``I would urge nationalists to execies extreme caution and to take whatever measures are required to ensure their safety. I would also appeal to unionist leaders in the city to use their influence to bring such sectarian attacks to an immediate end.
``I extend by sympathy and support to the Creane family at this difficult time.''
