Landmark Judgement Questions RUC Future

Statement from West Belfast Assembly member and Policing spokesperson Bairbre de Brún, welcoming the decision yesterday by the Full House of US Representative to end funding for US-sponsored training and exchange programmes involving the RUC.

Ms. de Brún said:

``The decision by the US House of Representatives to cut funding for training and exchange programme involving the RUC is a landmark judgement. The decision reflects international concern about the RUC, not only in relation to the deaths of human rights solicitors Rosemary Nelson and Pat Finucane, but indeed about the continued existence of the force itself. This decision once again highlights the need for a new police service to replace the RUC, which is totally unacceptable to the nationalist people.''
