Sectarian gun attack in north Belfast
Statement from Sinn Fein North Belfast Councillor, Mick Conlon, calling on people to exercise extreme caution and vigilance following last night's sectarian gun attack which injured three people.
Cllr. Conlon said:
``At 3 am this morning a loyalist mob attempted to make its way towards the nationalist area of Ligoniel. Residents concerned about the situation in the area, particularly over the past week, remained vigilant throughout this attempted invasion. Their presence prevented any incursion by the mob and a stand off situation developed.
``It was during this that a lone gunman emerged from the loyalist mob firing a number of shots at nationalist residents. Three people were hit. Two have subsequently been released from hospital and the third is still receiving treatment.
``This sectarian attack has followed a concentrated and well organised mobilisation by loyalists to effectively cut off and isolate the nationalist community of Ligoniel.
``I am calling on the people of this and other vulnerable areas to exercise extreme caution and remain vigilant in the days and weeks ahead.''ENDS
