Garvaghy Road Siege is not over - Ó Caoláin

Sinn Fein TD for Cavan/Monaghan Caoimhghín Ó Caolín is today visiting the Garvaghy Road in Portadown accompanied by the Vice-Chairperson of Monaghan County Council Brian McKenna and newly elected Sinn Fein Cavan County Councillor Pauline Tully.

Speaking from the Garvaghy Road Deputy Ó Caolaín said:

``The siege of the Garvaghy road Community is not over. People here are still under enormous pressure with sporadic violence directed against them, and the treat of further violence hanging over them all the time. This community has been in a intolerable situation for over a year now.

The Orange Order is still insisting that it will march down the Garvaghy Road where it is not welcome. It still refuses to meet the elected representatives of the residents.

The Garvaghy Road issue can only be resolved here, in direct dialogue between the residents and the Orange Order. It cannot be used as a bargaining counter in the wider political process. We have come here today to offer the solidarity of the people in Cavan and Monaghan to this community and we fully support the residents in their demands to be treated as first-class citizens.''
