McNarry comments inflammatory

Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams MP has urged Orange leaders to exercise responsible and calm leadership in this dangerous period. Responding directly to comments by UUP and Orange Order spokesperson David McNarry, Mr Adams said:

``David McNarry's comments that this state will be paralysed if Orangemen do not get their way is, at the very least, highly inflammatory in this volatile climate. Mr. McNarry and other Orange Order spokespersons must accept that they cannot wash their hands of the violence, intimidation and terror which their protest has brought for many people over the last week.

``Protest action in support of the Orangemen at Drumcree inevitably results in catholic families being driven from their homes, in the burning of catholic schools and church property and in mass intimidation directed at isolated nationalist communities throughout the north.

``Instead of issuing threats Mr. McNarry should be giving responsible leadership. Direct dialogue, rather than threats of escalation, is the only way to resolve this crisis.''ENDS
