Comments by former CO an attempt to obstruct justice

Mitchel McLaughlin, Sinn Fein Assembly member for Foyle, has described the accusations of the Parachute Regiment's CO on the day of Bloody Sunday as `an attempt to demonise the dead, their families and everyone who marched for civil rights'

Mr. McLaughlin said:

``Derek Wilford's accusations represent another pathetic attempt by the Para's CO to cover up this regiment's action which lead to the death of fourteen defenceless men.

``The Derry Coroner himself described the events on Bloody Sunday as `sheer unadulterated murder'

``Those who marched in Derry on that day contained many shades of political and religious opinion but all were united in the call for civil rights and an end to internment.

The families of the Bloody Sunday victims are entitled to the truth. The British military and political establishment are still opposed to this search for justice and Wilford's comments are designed to further obstruct the realisation of their efforts.
