RUC must go
Statement from Sinn Fein spokesperson on policing and Belfast Councillor Alec Maskey, calling for the disbandment of the RUC.
Mr. Maskey said:
``Any attempt to rehabilitate or sanitise the RUC will fail. They are a totally discredited force with a history of serving the interests of the British government and the unionist people. They are a unionist militia and have been one of the 0#main protagonists in this conflict.
``They have been indicted for torturing detainees, for killing people with live and plastic bullets, for colluding with loyalists like agent Brian Nelson and for refusing to publicise the Stalker and Samson enquiries.
``The RUC's days are numbered. That has to be the outcome of any Commission following the remit set out in the Good Friday agreement. It is clear from the agreement that any police service must enjoy the widespread support of all the people and must be an integral part of the community it proposes to police.
Clearly the RUC do not fit into this category.''
