Decommissioning dead-end issue

Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams MP speaking in New York dismissed David Trimble's remarks on decommissioning as ``entirely predictable and part of the old script, the old agenda.'' Mr. Adams said:

``US political and public opinion is much too sophisticated for the opportunism of Mr. Trimble. While he harps on about this dead-end issue of decommissioning, they are asking why after all this time he is still refusing to talk to Sinn Fein.

``Here in the USA there is greater concern being expressed at the absence of progress on the more important issues of equality, demilitarisation and getting the new all-Ireland institutions up and running.

``Mr. Trimble cannot cherry pick on the Good Friday agreement. Nor should he, at this critical time, be pandering to the Paisley and Donaldson agenda which seeks to subvert the agreement.''
