80th Anniversary of 1916 Rising
Speaking in Donegal today, Sinn Fein Vice President Pat Doherty called on people throughout the country to support the national march in Dublin next Saturday, April 27th, to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the 1916 Rising.
Mr. Doherty said:
``Today marks the 80th Anniversary of the 1916 Rising, a period which transformed the face of Irish politics. The Proclamation of 1916, which has yet to be realised, declared the right of the Irish people to full independence and national self-determination. It called for a society based on equality of all citizens and the just distribution of the nation's resources. Sinn Fein believe that the Proclaimation continues to have relevance for contemporary Irish society and still provides the basis for a practical and progressive political way forward.
``Sinn Fein will mark the 80th Anniversary of the 1916 Rising with a National March in Dublin on April 27th. The march will assemble at the Garden of Remembrance, Parnell Square at 2pm and the main speaker will be Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams.
``We ask all those people who share the hopes of those men and women of 1916 for a united, independent Ireland to join this march, to reassert the right of the Irish people to self determination and support the search for a just and lasting peace through inclusive negotiations.''
