Sinn Fein calls for second airport for Dublin

Sinn Fein's European candidate for Dublin, Seán Crowe, has called for Baldonnell Airport to be extended and used as Dublin's second Airport. The Tallaght based candidate said it made social and economic sense to locate the airport in an area where the basic infrasstrucure is already in place.

Mr Crowe said:

``Dublin needs another airport for the transfer of passengers and freight.Where better for Air Rianta, the state company to locate than at the existing Baldonnell Airport. This proposal would not take away from the military capacity of the airport but would modernise and enhance the armies operational capability in state emergencies

``This part of South Dublin has for too long been overlooked by the City planners. The location of this airport would be an ideal opportunity to correct a glaring imbalance in the development of Dublin..

`` Baldonnell is located near an existing major road network and not far from the existening rail network. It is a prime location for such a development and would add to the jobs and tourist potential of South County Dublin.

``A large proportion of Dublin's populatation, live around the hub roads of the M50, Naas Road and the Southern Cross Road. This would also be a further incentive for the Government to extend LUAS beyond the Square in Tallaght and out to many of the areas of high population where people actually live.''
