Election - A New Opportunity for Peace
Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams has welcomed the announcement of the date for the British general election. The Sinn Fein President added: ``We're looking forward to helping to create a new opportunity for peace. I believe that that is what the vast majority of people here will see this election as representing. It will be seen as a very defining moment in the future of this island.''
Mr. Adams said:
``I welcome the announcement. I think for too long the whole search for peace has been thwarted by the arithmetic at Westminster and at least the election will clear that up.
``I would like to think the incoming British government would try to re-create a new opportunity for peace and that people here will send a resounding message to London that we want peace; we want a peace settlement and that we want peace with justice in this country.
``In my view everything is possible if there is the political will. The last cessation broke down because there was no political will. Of course there is no guarantee that the incoming British government will have any more political will but it certainly couldn't have any less than John Major.
``We're looking forward to helping to create a new opportunity for peace. I believe that that is what the vast majority of people here see this election as representing. It will be seen as a very defining moment in the future of this island.''
