Sinn Fein at St. Mary's
Speaking before addressing students at St. Mary's College in Belfast, Sinn Fein Assembly Member for West Belfast and party spokesperson on Policing Bairbre de Brún appealed to the UUP not to `undermine' the inclusive nature of the process. She called on David Trimble to support the establishment of the structures outlined under the Good Friday Agreement.
Ms de Brún said:
``The progress we have made to date has resulted from a determination to move forward and from an honest attempt to reach agreement with people who hold very different views. This is not a time for scoring points against old opponents but rather for working together on the basis of the agreement, so that further progress can be made in the interests of all.
``There are three steps which need to be taken urgently, almost ten months after the Good Friday Agreement was reached. These are establishment of the Executive, the establishment of the all-Ireland Ministerial Council and the establishment of the all-Ireland implementation bodies.
``There is a collective duty on all of us who negotiated and supported the agreement to ensure that these steps are taken without delay. Everyone has fears for the future, and we all have reservations about `the other' arising from the past. However, we must not allow our fears to overcome our sense of opportunity or blind us to the healing possibilities of working together in a new network of institutions for the good of all our people.''
