O'Callaghan claims rubbished
Sinn Fein Chairperson Mitchel McLaughlin has described as ``preposterous and bizarre'' a claim by British agent Seán O'Callaghan which some media are carrying, that Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams asked the IRA in 1982 to assassinate SDLP leader John Hume. Mr. Adams dismissed the story as a lie. ``It is rubbish'' he said.
Mr. McLaughlin said:
``Sensible people, who have watched Mr. O'Callaghan's unexpected early release from prison and listened to his contradictory accounts of his activities, will treat this malicious allegation with the contempt it deserves.
``It is but the latest of a series of wild and untrue claims that he and his MI5 handlers have made as part of the British dirty tricks agenda.
``Seán O'Callaghan has sought to promote a British propaganda agenda with the aim of absolving the British government of responsibility for the collapse of the peace process and for rebuilding a new one.''
