Sinn Fein only real alternative to ``politics of sleaze''

Sinn Fein is set to make significant electoral gains throughout Ireland in 1999, says its TD Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin in a statement marking the resumption of the Dáil this week. The Cavan/Monaghan deputy said that the political process had again been tainted with yet more revelations which raise questions about the two main political parties and corruption in the planning process.

Deputy Ó Caoláin said that the only growing force and real alternative to the ``failed politics of sleaze'' was Sinn Fein. He predicted major gains for Sinn Fein in the June local elections.

Deputy Ó Caoláin said:

``The Dáil resumes in 1999 with yet more revelations which put a question mark over the integrity of the planning process over many years. The succession of revelations and tribunals has added to public disillusionment with the major parties. Only Sinn Fein can provide an electoral alternative through-out Ireland with both radical policies and candidates who have a proven record of work in the community. Sinn Fein representatives are beholden only to their constituents and not to vested interests who seek to corrupt the political process for personal financial gain.

``The demise of Democratic Left has not led to a new Party but simply added four TDs to the existing Labour Party. The really new factor in Irish politics in 1999 therefore will be the growth of Sinn Fein and I predict major gains for our party in the June local elections.''ENDS
