Doherty asks for transparency from government on Tax Amnesty
Sinn Fein Vice President Pat Doherty today questioned the attitude of government politicians who have refused to disclose whether or not they have taken advantage of the tax amnesty. The Taoiseach John Bruton, the Tanaiste Dick Spring and Government Chief Whip Jim Higgins were among several TDs who refused to tell a Sunday newspaper [Sunday Tribune] if they had benefited from the Government's tax amnesty.
Mr. Doherty said:
``It is outrageous that members of the government believe that the public has no right to know who benefited from the tax amnesty when it was the same politicians who backed a Government assault on dole claimants in the name of saving public money. Surely TDs - and Government ministers in particular - should be setting an example by showing transparency when it comes to the public purse.
``Why are TDs who are so keen on investigating claimants so reticent when it comes to the spotlight on their own personal finances and fulfilling their obligations to the taxpayers?''
