Sinn Fein backs ICTU call for right to work for asylum - seekers

Sinn Fein T.D. Caoimhghín ó Caoláin has backed the call of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions for asylum- seekers to be given the right to work.

Deputy ó Caoláin said:

``I support the Irish Congress of Trade Unions call for the right to work for those seeking asylum.The ban on work, forces asylum - seekers to depend on Social Welfare.

``It also forces them into the black economy where they are easily exploited by some employers who take advantage of their vulnerable legal position.

``I have raised this issue with the Taoiseach in our pre Christmas meeting in conjunction with the County Monaghan Roma Support Group.''
