Sinn Fein announce details of major Equality Conference

Sinn Fein will hold a major Equality Conference on the theme: `Measuring Equality under the Good Friday Agreement' on Wednesday 5th March 2003 in the Long Gallery at Stormont.

Speakers include the Chief Commissioner of the Equality Commission, Joan Harbinson; Tim Cunningham from the Equality Coalition; the Chairperson of the Southern Equality Authority, Kate Hayes; Dr Joanna McMinn Director of the National Women's Council of Ireland and Sinn Fein MLA Bairbre de Brun.

Members from over 100 community and voluntary organisations and representatives from statutory agencies have been invited to participate.

Speaking after the announcement of the details of the Equality Conference, Sinn Fein Equality Spokesperson Dr Dara O'Hagan said:

``This conference aims to further the democratic debate on Equality, particularly in the absence of the institutions. The panel of key note speakers in the equality field have been invited to answer the issues raised by the question of `Measuring Equality under the Good Friday Agreement', namely: What have been the results of the various equality initiatives to date - their successes and failures? How can these results be measured? What more and what else should be done to implement the equality agenda?'' ENDS
