Sinn Fein MLAs & MPs in Dublin to push for representation in Oireachtas
Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams MP and Chief Negotiator Martin McGuinness MP will lead a delegation of the party's MLAs and MPs to Dublin on Wednesday (28th May 2003) next to pursue the issue of Six County representation in Leinster House with the Government and opposition parties.
The visit will coincide with the second day of the debate on Sinn Fein's Private Members motion which will, among a number of issues connected to the peace process, urge the Government to act on Six County representation immediately.
Speaking in advance Sinn Fein whip in the Dáil Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD said: ``This week in the Dáil Sinn Fein will bring forward a Private Members motion calling on the Government, among other things, to act on northern representation in the Houses of the Oireachtas. Last week we welcomed the Taoiseach's commitment to move on the issue, however we expressed some concern as to the timescales involved. We don't believe there is any longer any excuse to delay in making the procedural changes necessary to bring this about. There is already all-party support for it. It is now just down to political will on behalf of the Government to make it happen. It should have happened already.
``We are going to use our Private Members time this week and a visit to Dublin by our fellow MLAs and MPs to bring this issue right back up to the top of the political agenda. With the Assembly suspended and elections cancelled it is imperative that people living in the Six Counties who aspire to national democracy rather than the link with Westminster have a forum in which they can be represented.''
