Gerry Adams welcomes election announcement

Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams MP this morning welcomed the calling of the election which has ended weeks of speculation and said: 'Sinn Fein looks forward to contesting this election. We are confident of increasing our mandate and bringing about real change in Irish society.' Mr. Adams said:

"This election will be about the type of Ireland that people want. Is it to be an Ireland where there is a continuation of the present unsatisfactory status quo or is it to be an Ireland that meets the needs of the people?

"Sinn Fein candidates and members are looking forward to this election campaign. The preparation work is done and I am confident that the work that Sinn Fein has done in relation to the peace process and in local communities over the past number of years will be rewarded.

"Sinn Fein is the party of change and I am looking forward to the election campaign and the positive results that we are confident of achieving."
