Ardagh Glass Management walking away from LRC recommendation

Dublin South East Representative Daithí Doolan this morning expressed dismay that the Management of Ardagh Glass was walking away from the recent Labour Relations Court recommendation. He was speaking after the issue of the closure of Ardagh Glass in Ringsend was raised by Sinn Fein with the Minister of State at the Department of the Environment & Local Government. Mr. Doolan said:

``The LRC and trade unions agreed on a package which would intitle each worker to five weeks pay for every year worked. The Ardagh Management have chosen to ignore this recommendation and offer only statuory redundancy. This is made even more difficult to swallow by the fact that Ardagh Glass is still operating at a profit.''

Doolan urged the Minister''to take every possible step to ensure these workers are treated with the respect they deserve. The trade unions and their members have been nothing but co-operative at this time. Yet the Ardagh Management have shown blatant disregard for workers rights and the plight of their families.

Of course the longer term solution is that this factory is immediately taken over with state funding and made an integral part of our Waste Management Plan by upgrading its recycling capacity.''

Doolan concluded by calling on the Minister of Environment & Local Government to show his committment to saving jobs and supporting a sutainable Waste Management Plan by including the Irish Glass Bottle factory in any future plan.
