99 jobs lost in Clones
``Government must intervene to replace jobs'' - Ó Caoláin
Cavan/Monaghan TD Caoimhghin Ó Caolain has described as ``devastating'' today's announcement of the loss of 99 jobs at CPV (Containers and Pressure Vessels) Ltd. in Clones, County Monaghan. Deputy Ó Caoláin said:
``This is a devastating blow to the 99 workers, their families and the wider community in Clones and in Co. Monaghan just five days before Christmas. CPV is the only manufacturing industry in Clones, a town which already has a higher than average level of unemployment.
``It has been known for some time that CPV's parent company has been trying to sell it off but this does not in any way lessen the cruelty of this closure for those dependent on the company for their employment and livelihood. Earlier this year I raised directly with the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Mary Harney the difficulties of the company, having met with management.
``It is vital that Minister Harney and Forbairt, should intervene without delay to find a replacement industry or industries for Clones. This town has long suffered the economic and social effects of partition as well as the wilful neglect of successive governments. It must not be allowed to sink once again into a position of marginalisation.
``I have today e-mailed the office of Minister Harney urging her immediate action to rescue these crucial jobs for the workforce and for the wider Clones community.''ENDS
