Ferris Calls For Urgent Action On Fish Quotas

The Sinn Fein Spokesperson on the Marine, Martin Ferris TD, attended the protests organised by Kerry fishermen at Dingle and Fenit this afternoon. On Tuesday, Deputy Ferris attempted unsuccessfully to have the business of the Dáil adjourned to allow for discussion of the order to end fishing for certain species by the Irish fleet.

Deputy Ferris said; I and my party are fully behind the demands of the fishing organisations for urgent action to be taken to protect the livelihoods of those involved in the industry here. It is crucially important that these concerns are voiced at the highest levels within the EU by Minister Dermot Ahern.

The order to Irish fishermen to stop fishing for certain species could not have come at a worse time. The damage inflicted is compounded by the fact that other EU fleets with larger quotas can continue to fish for these species in our waters. It is further proof that the interests of the industry are not being adequately protected under the current Common Fisheries Policy.
