De Brun voices anger at political policing

Speaking at Andersonstown PSNI Barracks at one of a series of protests across the Six Counties today to protest at the political raids by the PSNI yesterday Sinn Fein Assembly member for the area Bairbre de Brun said:

``People in the nationalist community are angry at the political intervention yesterday by the PSNI. We are told that we no longer have a partisan political police force but the activities of the PSNI yesterday underlined graphically just how far we still hae to come before reaching the acceptable policing service demanded by the Good Friday Agreement.

``Since March of last year when Mr. Trimble indicated the possibility that he would collapse the institutions and point the finger of blame at republicans there have been a number of very public interventions by the PSNI and other securocrats. All of these had the aim of demonising republicans

``Alan McQuillan has been central to this. He has used off the record briefings and leaks. Others in the British securocrat system have planted bogus stories in willing elements of the media.

``Sinn Fein for our part will not be diverted from the task at hand. We are committed to the peace process and committed to the full implementation of the Good Friday Agreement.''
