Illegal Dumps investigation welcomed

Dublin City Councillor Nicky Kehoe today welcomed the announcement that the Gardaí have commenced a full-scale criminal inquiry into illegal dumping throughout the state. Councillor Kehoe said:

``The discovery of unauthorised dumps in Dublin, Wicklow and elsewhere has proved that illegal dumping is a scourge that needs to be tackled head on. I hope that this Garda investigation will result in the prosecution of those responsible for such acts.

``One such company, Dublin Waste, which is based in East Wall, in Dublin Central, have continually violated their operating licence causing many problems for local people. I recently arranged for local residents to meet with the management of the company to discuss the situation.

``The events of last year when these dumps were discovered highlights the failure of the government's waste management strategy.

``This strategy needs to be re-considered with an emphasis on recycling facilities rather than landfill and incineration.''
