Sligo Councillor uses personal council expenses to provide traffic calming measures in local estate Sligo Sinn Fein Councillor Arthur Gibbons has allocated £3,500 of his own personal council expenses to provide for the installation of a series of speed ramps in Cartron estate in Sligo. At last nights meeting of Sligo Corporation, Cllr Gibbons put forward a motion to this effect which was adopted without any opposition. At last months meeting, the Deputy Mayor of Sligo Fianna Fail Councillor Tommy Cummins ruled this same motion out of order and prevented it being dealt with.
Cllr Gibbons said: ``I am delighted to put this money to good use. This is money which each Councillor has allocated to them to cover their expenses for their attendance at conferences throughout the country each year. It is my belief that this money is far better spent on making Cartron estate a safer place for local residents and pedestrians, particularly young children and the elderly, than it would be by my attendance at various conferences over the next twelve months.''
Cllr Gibbons, who is employed on a Community Employment Scheme, said that that this is ``something I feel very strong about. I was disappointed at the size of this years Block Grant which meant this work could not be funded. Therefore, I am more than willing to sacrifice my own personal expenses to ensure that these speed ramps can now go ahead. I am not afraid to put my money where my mouth is'' he concluded. ENDS
