Nice Treaty: Adjournment of Dáil demanded over government's ``flagrant violation of the will of the electorate''
Sinn Fein TD Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin will today seek the adjournment of the Dáil for a special debate on what he describes as the ``flagrant violation of the will of the electorate'' by the government. He said:
``I am seeking seek the adjournment of the Dáil for an urgent debate on the joint statement of the EU Foreign Ministers at Luxembourg, including the Irish Foreign Minister Brian Cowen, in which they reiterate their intention to implement the Nice Treaty in flagrant violation of the democratic will of the electorate in this State as expressed on 7th June 2001. Further statements from the Swedish Presidency, EU Commission President Romano Prodi and French President Jacques Chirac fly in the face of the democratic decision made by the people. Their arrogant pledge to proceed with Nice regardless of the fact that the Irish referendum has refused to ratify it confirms everything that we in the No campaign have said about the anti-democratic nature of the drive to an EU superstate.''
