Lawlor resignation welcomed by Gerry Adams

Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams said that he welcomed the resignation of Deputy Lawlor as Vice-Chair of the Oireachtas Committee on Finance and the Public Service.

Speaking in Dublin prior to meeting Taoiseach Bertie Ahern to discuss the peace process, Mr Adams said:

``Deputy Lawlor's resignation hasn't come a day too soon.  He should have done the honourable thing a long time ago.

``There are very many people in public life who are sincere and committed to changing society for the better.  But, as saw in the National Youth Council survey published yesterday in Dublin, the actions of some politicians are undermining people's confidence in politics.  We must restore that confidence.''
