Extra funds for ambulance services welcomed

Following representations made by Dublin City Councillors Christy Burke and Nicky Kehoe, the Eastern Regional Health Authority has allocated an additional £1.6 million to the East Coast Area Health Board for improved ambulance services.

Councillor Burke, a Sinn Fein councillor for the North Inner City, welcomed the additional funding, saying that it was much needed given the rise in population and increased demand on the service.

The additional allocation will boost emergency ambulance service, including the purchase of four new Accident & Emergency ambulances, four four-wheel drive ambulance vehicles, four motorcycles, and training, radio and communications equipment.  There will also be training and recruitment of extra ambulance personnel.

Councillor Burke said:

``I have been lobbying for additional ambulance services for some time and I hope that this additional funding relieves some of the pressure that is currently on the emergency ambulance services in the city. I urge the Corporation and Health Board to ensure that the ambulance service is properly funded so that the services does not again become over-stretched.''
