Government reform of private-rented sector: Delay gives landlords 2-year open season on tenants
Sinn Fein South Dublin County Councillor Seán Crowe said that the Government's two-year time-frame in which to reform the private-rented sector announced by Housing Minister Bobby Molloy today (Friday) ``gives unscrupulous landlords a two-year open season on vulnerable tenants''.
Cllr Crowe said:
``Housing Minister Bobby Molloy might argue that the delay will give landlords time to clean up their act. I am currently dealing with the illegal eviction in Clondalkin of a woman with two children in Christmas week. One of the children was a 4-week-old baby. That sort of landlord is more likely to see the two-year time frame as a breathing space in which to get rid of tenants.
``The parties in Leinster House must not drag their feet on getting laws to protect tenants' rights on the statute books.''
