Pylons Decision: ``A Victory for People Power'' - Pearse Doherty

Sinn Fein representative Pearse Doherty has welcomed this weeks decision by An Bord Pleanála to refuse Planning permission to the ESB for the erection of 100km of 110kv poles and pylons through Donegal.

Speaking following the announcement Mr. Doherty said:

``This is very clearly a victory for People Power. I congratulate the `Alternatives to Pylon' group on the excellent campaign that they organised against this application. The People of Donegal and the many visitors to the area are quite rightly proud of their Trojan efforts on our behalf.

``However, in the wake of this decision, questions must be answered quickly. The primary one regards the fact that this application was initially granted by Donegal County Council. An Bord Pleanála clearly stated in their report that this application was in breech of county development plan. Why then did the local authority fail to observe this fact by refusing the planned pylons? I am calling for a full investigation into this matter.''
