Sammy Wilson - Sectarian Mayor

The leader of the Sinn Fein group on Belfast City Council Cllr. Tom Hartley has hit out at the comments of the Mayor Sammy Wilson regarding the proposed visit of President Clinton to the city next month.

Cllr. Hartley said:

``Once again the Mayor Sammy Wilson is out of step with the vast majority of the citizens of this city. Mr Wilson is supposed to be the Mayor for all of the people of Belfast, not simply the tiny minority who support the DUP.

Cllr. Hartley said: ``His term of office has up to this point been littered with one sectarian reference after another. He refused to speak out against attacks on the homes of nationalists in the city during the summer, he

brought international embarrassment on the city with his comments about the Dali Lama and now he is attacking a US President who has given an extraordinary amount of time to support the search for peace in Ireland.

Cllr. Hartley concluded: ``The people of Belfast are growing increasingly tired of Sammy Wilson s outbursts in their name. He has failed to be a Mayor for all the citizens of this city and with each public comment he makes he seems to underline that fact.''
