Pensioner's wall demolished by `joy-riders' rebuilt by locals 36 in community clean-up as council accused of neglect
A Tallaght Sinn Fein councillor who this weekend led a residents' community clean-up and repairs on a pensioner's home damaged by `joy-riders' has accused the local authority of neglecting its duty to help people keep their neighbourhoods clean.
Three dozen residents and local Sinn Fein Councillor Se.n Crowe carried out a five-hour clean-up in the Cushlawn area of Killinarden on Saturday afternoon (11am to 4pm).
They removed rubble left behind by work crews from the new TV cablelink agent, NTL, the ESB and other companies, Councillor Crowe said. They also fixed a pensioner's garden wall demolished by car thieves and which the council has repeatedly refused to mend..
Cllr Crowe said the weekend turn-out and work showed the commitment of local people. ``Now where is the commitment of the local authority?
``I am calling on South Dublin County Council to adopt a more proactive attitude to areas of high disadvantage, to take into account this community's real needs and demonstrate some of their commitment.''
